Di’ja Know…Black History Month Edition
In honor of black history month we want to share some interesting and cool facts that could be used for everyday of the year.
Cathay Williams was the first African American female Buffalo Soldier, posing as a man named William Cathay to enlist in the 38th infantry in 1866. She served for two years before a doctor discovered that she was a woman, leading to her discharge.
The hair brush, lawn mower, cellphone, refrigerator, and the air conditioner were all the fruits of African-American inventors’ creative laboring.
At age 42, Satchel Paige became the oldest rookie to play Major League Baseball and continued to play until he was 47.
Barack Obama is a lot of firsts, but he’s also a Grammy award winner. His audio books, Dreams from My Father and The Audacity of Hope, won Best Spoken Word Album in 2008.
The varsity chess team from Eisenhower High School brought home four medals at the South Suburban Conference Red Division meet. Thor Talbott won first place on Board 8, while three Cardinals took second place on their boards. Eddie Munoz took second Board 2; Fabian Villanueva won second on Board 5; and, Walter Terraza took second on Board 6.
